Moving on
Unfortunately, I don't think I have enough time to do the web site for Robert. Instead, I will work on MultiSpec for my science project. My project is looking for pine tree population in two or three different years and comparing those statistics to ozone in the atmosphere, and maybe a few different measurements.

Robert's site
Alright, I've looked over the files in Robert's soon to be web site. Wow! That's a lot of stuff! I think I will throw his rock identification online if that's ok, just to see how well it works. There is one link that is not working, but I will fix that soon. Any suggestions?

Update
Here's what I've done in the past few days...
Last week I talked about ports with you and tried to figure out how stuff works. I then went on to research ports and many other things. Yesterday, I learned a little about telnet, and was able to access telnet servers from the terminal in my computer. Pretty interesting stuff!

Oops!
Oops! I read that wikipedia article, and figured out my problem. Here is my server
ftp://userver.serveftp.com/
It works!

Speeds
I am testing my server out, and for some reason when I upload a file, the speed maxes out at exactly 1 meg a second. I will try downloading it for more results. It could be the network, or my network card, or maybe the server, but I set that to max out at 99999 KBPS. Weird.
Also, no hope for giving it a domain name. Don't know why, but nothing works with FTP servers.

More stuff
I figured I would start blogging more on what I've been doing. Not much (it's been vacation!)
But, I am still looking for a way to give my FTP server a domain name other than 65.175.195.33. It's not going so well. I tried turning it into a HTTP server, but that didn't work. I found out what port 990 did, though. It is FTPS, a more secure FTP server. I guess that means all transfers are encoded so they can not be spied on. Is that correct?
Also, any advice on giving it a domain name?

Sorry for the lack of blogging
Sorry about that! Anyway, I set the server up on the local network, and thanks to Richard it is up on the internet now. It can be accessed from ftp://65.175.195.33 the user name is julian and the password is XXXXXX. I am working on assigning it a domain name so I don't have to just type in the IP address.
Also, the IP address without the FTP is the IP of all the computers in the school. I thought that was interesting.
